You saw an ad on Indeed.com applied to it and got an interview. The meeting with the hiring manager went beyond awesome in your view and then 2 weeks go by and nothing.
Crickets!
Have tried the common follow up tips that recruiters suggest to do after an interview? If so then try these tips on what to do if you haven't heard back after your interview that Forbes.com writer, Lisa Quast suggests. In the meantime, it is time to figure out what happened. We have all been there but do you know what some of the most common reasons are for not receiving a callback? Check out this article on Flexjobs.com to find out why and while you're there look through the listings. You might find the perfect new position to start your new year off right.
Be Do Have!
Picture yourself in this scenario:
You are on a first date with someone you are really attracted to and things are going great. This person might be the "ONE". You nervously contemplate should you end the evening with a kiss goodnight, a "night cap" or simply say goodnight. What you decide will set the tone for better or worse for future encounters with this person. The person who simply says goodnight knows a thing or two about patience and puts great trust in the motto "All Good Things Come to Those Who Wait". The person who chooses to do the other two options risk rushing into a situation that may be the wrong fit for them.
The Same Holds True In Business
Let's say that you are in a meeting with someone who is presenting you with a great career opportunity. And they start to describe the perks of the job, the benefits & pay. All that sounds great, but what are you going to need to do on a daily basis within this "great career opportunity"? Be patient enough to analyze the fine print to see exactly what you are agreeing to do in exchange for your time and for the money. This piece of advice is one that I push myself daily to follow within the business world.
Why Do You Need Patience?
Patience is necessary to give you the time to analyze a situation, research the facts and LISTEN to your inner-self to see if this is something that resonates within your soul or if you are simply selling yourself out for a buck. Just because something looks good on the outside doesn't mean it is the right thing for YOU.
My goal in 2016 is to make patience more of a friend than foe. What about you?
Many people have subscribed to the conventional way of living. Go to college, get a high paying job, get married, have 2.0 kids, buy a house, retire and then die. There is nothing wrong with that...except many people also find themselves longing for a sense of purpose and fulfillment.
What does fulfillment really mean?
I googled it and believe it or not there were many definitions that popped up. The one that captured what I believe it means is this one: "satisfaction or happiness as a result of fully developing one's abilities or character." In the book Play To Win by Larry Wilson, he states, "Fulfillment is knowing that, if you died tomorrow, your life would have meant something, that it was going in the right direction and you were making a difference."
WOW! That's a pretty powerful statement.
Here are 3 ways we can all strive to live a life of fulfillment:
Do work that incorporates our passion, skills, talent and knowledge
Live more positively
Give back & volunteer on a regular basis
Life is fleeting at best. I know that at times I can forget that by placing too much emphasis on chasing goals, money or stuff. At the end of my journey I want to look back and know that I lived a life of fulfillment and all the other "stuff" won't matter.
Next week we will take a peek at how you can do work that includes your entire being instead of just being a cog in the wheel.
What about you? Are you on the path to living a life of fulfillment or are you stuck in a rut? Share your thoughts with me below.
Be Do Have!
Well, Summer is gone and Fall is officially here my friends. It is a great time to take an assessment of what is working or not working in our lives and make some changes. I like to do that often and here are 5 easy ways that I have done it:
Write down my goals for the next day before I go to sleep. Now I am not saying I do this all the time, but when I don't do it my days don't run as smoothly. Writing things down in advance helps me to relieve my thoughts of stress and chaos and helps me to sleep easier.
Rise early to meditate & pray. I am a Christian and getting up early to pray in the quiet or listen to an inspirational sermon or uplifting music always does the trick for me. Whatever your faith is or isn't getting into a routine where you rise early to sit and meditate before your day begins can help to set the right tone throughout your day.
Workout Daily. I love to walk and do Zumba. My main exercise these days is walking fast. There are many hilly streets here in the Bay Area and it provides its' own outdoor gym landscape. It gives me an opportunity to clear my mind, get fresh air and take in natures beauty.
Eat Well. Now I am not going to tell you that I am THE most conscientious eater. Nope! I love my fried foods and cheesecake just like the next person BUT I am learning to decrease my intake of fatty foods, eat smaller portions, eat more vegetables and drink more water. And that is a start.
Focus more on the positive things in life. My husband loves it when something isn't going as planned and I start off my conversation with "Well look at the bright side". He really doesn't sometimes and laughs, but in all honesty, it is good to shift your focus to the bright side of things. This is great even if things are really going to hell in a handbasket. It is always a good reminder to remember that it can always be worse than it is and to be grateful for what you have.
Well, these are my 5 easy ways to reorganize your life. It isn't new information, but just reminders on how to get recalibrated to live life to the fullest. What are some ways that you reorganize your life? Sharing is caring:)
Be Do Have!
I don't know about you, but I have experienced burn out more times than I can count. It can be difficult to get the energy to continue to go after your goals when you're just plain out of gas. So the question becomes how do we stay inspired when you are in a rut?
You can try a few ways that I have listed below and let me know if it works for you.
Take time out of your life first thing in the morning to pray and meditate
Get moving and go walk, run, skip whatever you do to move and bring along a good motivational podcast or some good upbeat music
Get organized and do the smallest thing on your list first. This will help to build momentum throughout your day.
Everyone gets stuck in a rut from time to time. The key is to get unstuck and back on track as soon as possible.
BE DO HAVE!
Have you ever thought this after applying for a job that you haven't heard back from? Well, I know I sure have. I would often wonder what happened to my resume, application and cover letter. What about you? Well, according to an article in the Ladders this line of thinking isn't completely off target. Matthew Rothenberg from the Ladders.com states that, "The hiring process is still obscure to most job seekers; all too often, qualified candidates do find themselves facing a “black hole” that offers them no new information about the position for which they’ve applied."
So what is a potential job candidate to do?
In two words: Be Patient.
I know that is easier said than done, especially when your feet are being held to the fire. The lights need to stay on and food must be in the refrigerator. The fact still remains that you can only do what you can do and the rest is left up to fate. Luckily, there are plenty of things you can do to make yourself stand out. It's definitely a rat race out there but that makes choosing work that you love even more important than ever as a goal. Black hole or not.
Any thoughts on the whole "black hole" resume phenomenon. Tell me in the comments below. In the meantime check out this article on the journey your resume goes through.
Be Do Have!
Have you ever applied to job or saw a freelance project that caught your interest only to discover you were not qualified? It usually reads something like this:
Candidates must possess:
• "X" number Years of Related Experience
• Superior "fill in the blank" Skills
• General knowledge in area of position
• Must be proficient with the use of "fill in the blank".
So what do you do now? Your background meets the criteria except the "X" number years of related experience. In an article on US News & Report, Alison Green talks about how you can obtain a job when you don't have all the required experience. In the article she points to gaining experience via volunteering and doing projects on your own.
I would also add to this list gain experience by taking professional development online courses. Alison's article is a must read and offers very practical tips to get you started on the road to finding an opportunity that may prove to be very fulfilling. It's your turn. How do you feel when you read through a job description only to discover that your experience isn't exactly a match?
